CHN: Top-ranked Terriers; A Defenseman for the Future

After their selection by Hockey East coaches to finish first in the conference, the Terriers have received the top ranking in College Hockey News’ Pre-season Top 10. Rather than a poll, CHN describes the ranking as a projection of the Pairwise next March.

All four of last April’s Frozen Four teams found spots in CHN's top five: Minnesota is #2, Michigan #4 and Quinnipiac #5. Perennial power Denver nailed down the #3 spot. Hockey East rivals BC and Merrimack were slotted at #9 and #10 respectively.

Looking ahead

BU received the first commitment for its 2026 recruit classand it’s first-ever recruit from Asia. Simon (Haoxi) Wang, born in Beijing, China, is a 6’4”, 202 lb., left-shot  defenseman playing this season in the Ontario Junior Hockey League for the Brantford 99ers. Wang, who has been in Ontario for several years and turned 16 this past summer, played for the North York Rangers 16U in the Greater Toronto Hockey League last season generating seven points in 33 games.

This past Spring, he was drafted by Oshawa in the fifth round of the OHL draft. The Generals GM noted: “If he can come in here and be the player we think he can be, he can be a heck of a player. He’s a bit of a physical specimen. He’s a big dude, and this guy can move.”

Wang also was selected by Dubuque in the ninth round of the 2023 USHL entry draft.

BleacherReport’s Way Too Early 2024 Mock Draft has three Terriers pegged for the first round: #1 Macklin Celebrini, #14 Cole Hutson and #31 Kamil Bednarik.

Elite Prospects lead scout David St-Louis analyzes shifts of Hutson who last year set a record for points by an NTDP blueliner in one season.

Looking back

Matt Brown, who signed a one-year contract with AHL Lehigh Valley, turned heads during the Flyers’ two-game rookie series against the Rangers.

Speaking of Brown, he was easily the most impressive of the camp invites. He was one of the quicker Flyers on the weekend, and didn’t look out of place on lines next to some of the club’s better prospects. Granted, he’s 24, so he should stand out in games like this, but a goal and an assist isn’t too shabby, especially given the roster’s scoring struggles on the weekend. Brown did lose the puck on multiple occasions under checking pressure, but that also speaks to how often Brown had the puck on his stick across the two games — he was constantly engaged in the play.

Did he do enough to potentially earn an entry-level contract? Well, he was one of the first players that [Flyers' AHL Coach Ian] Laperriere name-dropped on Friday, and on Saturday, Lappy did nothing to throw cold water on the idea.

“Since Day 1 of camp, he’s been pushing, he’s been working hard, he’s been doing everything we’re asking him to do,” Laperriere said.

In other words, keep an eye on this one.
